Elements |
- Hard Bop differs from Bebop with more
varying accompaniments, and more emphasis on unrelenting swing
feel. Associated with Charles Mingus and Horace Silver.
- Cool jazz was more mellow and melodic
than Bop, taking harmonies from contemporary composers like Debussy.
Associated with Miles Davis.
- Modal jazz used accompaniment that rarely
changed and focused on the virtuosity of the soloist for the melodic
interest. Associated with John Coltrane.
- West Coast Jazz was a more relaxed style
of bebop with rhythmic variety in meters other than 4/4.
Associated with Dave Brubeck, and Gerry Mulligan.
- Jazz / Rock styles overlapped to create
the style known as Fusion. It contained small frequently repeated
sections called vamping. Associated with Herbie Hancock.
