Stylistic Elements

  1. Ever since the introduction of the Spanish six-string guitar musicians and makers have sought louder instruments.
  2. Hawiian guitars of the 1930's relied on amplification to produce any sound.
  3. The first electric amplifier was not very powerful (15 watts)
  4. Around 1931 George Beauchamp and Adolph Rickenbacker produced an electromagnetic pickup known as the Frying Pan.
  5. Around 1940, Les Paul mounted strings and pickups on a solid block of pine (nicknamed the log)to minimize body vibrations.
  6. Later Leo Fender began experimenting with solid body designs to reduce feedback issues in amplified hollow body guitars.
  7. Musicians in the 60's experimented with overloading amps, thus creating a "distortion" of the source sound.
  8. Virtuosic techniques developed in the Jazz and Country styles influenced Rock stars of the Heavy Metal era.

  1. In 1942, Enrico Fermi at the University of Chicago produces the first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction.
  2. In 1951, the first commercial computer, the UNIVAC 1, is sold to the U.S. Census Bureau.
  3. In 1955, the Nautilus, the first nuclear submarine,allows travel for thousands of miles with a single charge.
  4. In 1960, Physicist Theodore H. Maiman creates the first laser from a man-made ruby.
  5. In 1965, Digital Equipment creates the PDP-8, the first mini-computer to use integrated circuit technology.
  6. In 1970, Corning Glass creats a glass fiber that it can communicate pulses of light, transmit sound and image data.
  7. In 1975, Bill Gates and Paul Allen form a partnership known as Microsoft to write computer software.
  8. In 1983, Led by IBM, the "PC" or Personal Comuter changes the face of business and communication.
  9. In 2006, Internet 2 boasts tranfer speeds of over 9 gigabits per second.
